Master in Economics (Non-Thesis)
The primary aim of the Economics Master’s Degree Programme is to enable our prospective graduates to take part in today’s economic institutions both public and private as fully fledged economists. Another aim of the Programme is to enable our prospective graduates an education which will advance the academic studies in the field of economic policy with their professional skills suitable for the global conditions.
During the Thesis Master’s Degree Programme in Economics, students are offered the course ‘‘Master’s Degree Seminar for Economists’’, as well as the courses taught during the first academic year of the Programme in the field of ‘‘Micro and Macro analysis’’, and ‘‘Research Methods for Social Sciences’’. In the second academic year, students work on their theses. During the Non-Thesis Master’s Degree Programme in Economics, the courses ‘‘Contemporary Micro and Macro analysis’’, ‘‘Research Methods for Social Sciences’’, and other relevant courses are offered to students in the first year, and they work on their project in the third term of the Programme.
The Master’s Degree Programme in Economics aims to contribute to meeting the need for instructors and researchers in the academic fields related to the Social Sciences, to the educating students to be assigned in the public institutions through which economy and politics are in an intensive interaction, and educating researchers who adopt interdisciplinary approach to the economic theories in interaction with the aims and results of the policies in institutions which is important for the development of economic policies.
The courses taught within the Master’s Degree Programme in Economics are held in Taksim, which is at the centre of Istanbul, and easily accessible from any location. Besides the conventional courses in Economics taught by the academic staff who have experience both in private sector and in academic studies, the courses on current economic developments and policies also enable the students to become fully fledged graduates. Moreover, the courses on Research Methods, which are significant for Economics, make the theses more profound and academically valuable. Therefore, students will not only have the opportunity to carry out research, but also they will adopt the scientific methods which support their research by the time they graduate.
Program Specific Requirements
- To apply for the Thesis Master’s Degree Programme, candidates must hold a bachelor’s diploma, and submit their copy of the ALES (Academic Staff and Postgraduate Education Admission Exam) score, which must be at least 55 of the required weight (verbal or quantitative or equally weighted) by the Programme. The exam is centrally held by ÖSYM (Centre for Assessment, Selection, and Placement). The ALES is not required for the non-thesis master’s degree programme.

- Learning Outcomes By the end of the Master’s Degree Programme in Economics, students will be able to: Acquire the skills in defining, and analysing the economic issues scientifically through Micro and Macro analyses. Analyse the basics of Economics, and the history of the economic policies. Use the methodology and research techniques in Social Sciences to apply the analytical techniques. Comprehend the projection of the theoretical knowledge acquired through elective courses regarding Economics in the professional world. Apply the detailed analysis and the research methods within the scope of the thesis/project topic chosen. Acquire the skills of making use of theories and concepts regarding Economics competently and uniquely to analyse the current economic issues within the Programme.
Career Opportunities
- Graduates of the Programme can work in relevant public institutions, at universities’ Department of Economics, and the relevant departments in the private sector. Many business institutions, public and private organisations, and banks prefer to employ those who hold an Economics Master’s Degree.
